The lodges buildings were some of the first built in the Mokhotlong Region. These buildings were initiallu used to house the clergy of the church and later they were turned into classrooms for the St James Primary School. [Read more]- Uplift the local community through skills development.
The hotel has many projects to achieve this goal. Here are some details:
- There is currently no access to water at the St. James Primary School, that is, no flush toilets (only long drop toilets) or basins to wash hands. This makes sanitation a major problem. The hotel is currently raising funds to gut and the purchase a 2500L Jojo tank for the school.
- The Touching Tiny Lives Project is an existing project reaching new-borns to 2 year olds. The hotel supports this project by collecting baby clothes, toys, baby food and accessories for these sick and abandoned babies.
- The St. Joseph's Creche Project supports 2 to 8 year old children. The hotel helps collecting and donating clothing, toys and educational games to the creche. It is also raising funds to build and furnish a new classroom for this over-crowded crèche. The crèche is operated by the Sisters of St. Joseph and supports the extended Mokhotlong area. There are currently over 150 children occupying 2 classrooms with a combined area of less than 40 square metres.
- The hotel supports and encourages the growth through an Arts & Crafts Project within the community which facilitates an annual workshop. During the workshop ladies from an Arts & Craft Club in Pietermaritzburg teach the local people skills. These skills give the local women an opportunity to earn a living by using their hands and imagination. Any donations of beads, wire, and craft tools are very much appreciated.
- For the St. James High School Project the hotel collects magazines and a variety of books for the library. The school's Sports Committee is responsible for the introduction of Olympic sports plus traditional/indigenous games into the school. The hotel hopes to raise funds for the purchase and installation of courts, fields and equipment in order to make such sports available.
- The hotel's Tourism Awareness Project is offered at the St. James High School. It covers the South African Unit Standards for Nature, Culture and Adventure Guiding. The aim is to teach Lesotho teenagers many aspects of tourism on an introductory level so they can see the benefits of tourism and how they fit into it. In conjunction with this project, the hotel plans to create a 'Tourism and Entrepreneurship Workshop' to educate the locals about tourism and its benefits, and to encourage them to be proud of their heritage and assist them to establish sustainable tourism related initiatives.
- The hotel assists the sisters of St. James Mission Support by collecting and donating clothing, bedding, medical accessories and basic food items. It assists financially for the Home-Based Care Project which helps the disabled and sick in outlying villages of the Mokhotlong Region. These donations are used for medical supplies and specialised equipment which is used and dispersed by the sisters of St Joseph.
