St James Lodge


There are plenty mountains surrounding St James with goat paths all over them and so there are some amazing hiking trails on offer, however these are not for the faint-hearted as at 3000 metres above sea level the air is very thin and breathing generally difficult. [read more]

Getting there

From Sani Pass

- St. James Lodge is roughly 1.25 hours from Sani Top.
- Take the road from Sani Top towards Mokhotlong, you will pass through a few small villages on your way.
- When you reach the T-junction at the Majekisani village, turn left towars Thaba Tseka.
- This road winds down the Sehonghong Gorge, crosses over the river, and up the other side.
- At this point, the village immediately on your left as you climb out of the Gorge is St. James.
- The lodge is to the right of the church and has red rooves.

From Fouriesberg/ Caledonespoort Border Post

- St. James Lodge is roughly 2.5 hours from the Caledonespoort Border Post.
- Follow the road into Butha-Buthe town and turn left at the T-junction sign-posted Oxbow/ Sani Pass/ Afri-ski/ Mokhotlong/ Litseng Diamond mine.
- This road passes through the suburbs of Butha-Buthe then winds its way up and over an awesome mountain pass before reaching the highlands and ski-slopes of Afriski.
- Continue on the road past the diamond mine (beware of pot-holes!) and through a few more small villages, following the signs to Mokhotlong/ Sani Pass.
- As you reach the top of the hill on the outskirts of Mokhotlong, you'll come to a T-junction sign-posted Sani Pass/ Thaba Tseka, here turn right.
- Roughly 1.5km along this road (turns to dirt shortly after the junction), you'll reach another T-junction at the village of ha Majekasani marked Thaba Tseka/ St. James, here turn right.
- The road winds down the Sehonghong Gorge, crosses over the river, and up the other side.
- The village immediately on your left as you climb out of the gorge is St. James.
- The lodge is to the right of the church and has the red rooves.
